How To Choose the Best Acoustic Panels?

May. 22, 2021

If you are soundproofing your room, you will need to choose acoustic panels that will get the job done right the first time. The last thing you want to do is buy a pack of soundproofing panels that will become useless and send you back to the drawing board. Next, the acoustic panels supplier  will share the following content with you.

Before you buy the first pack of acoustic panels you come across, you need to know how to choose the best ones. That way, the job is done the first time, and you can enjoy your soundproofed room or studio immediately!

If you are not familiar with acoustic panels, you may be wondering what they are and how they work. I will give you a brief explanation of acoustic panels and how they are used for sound absorption.

Acoustic Panels

 Acoustic Panels

Acoustic panels are made of foam and absorb medium and high frequencies. This is what makes acoustic panels so useful when soundproofing your home or studio. The surface of the panels can be flat or sculpted, and the panels come in a variety of sizes.

Flat panels are flat and will absorb sound through the thickness of the foam. The thicker the panel, the more sound will be absorbed.Easy to install, acoustic panels are an effective way to soundproof any room in your home, office or studio.

Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC)

You should always look for an NRC rating on the acoustic panels you find. the NRC rating will be between 0 and 1. This means that you will see the rating as a decimal, for example 0.75.

So what does this mean?

Seeing an NRC rating of 0.75 means that 75% of the sound that comes in contact with the acoustic panel will be absorbed. Therefore, you will only hear about 25% of the remaining sound that is not absorbed by the acoustic panel.

Of course, the higher the rating, or the closer to 1 the rating, the better the sound absorption of the acoustic panel. After all, sound absorption is essentially the scientific term for soundproofing, because the panels don't eliminate the sound that is emitted, they just absorb it to prevent you from hearing it.

A low NRC of 0.5 or less means that less than 50% of the sound that comes in contact with an acoustic panel will be absorbed. This means that you will hear more than 50% of the original sound. This is a large percentage.

This means that even the thickest, most dynamically designed foam panels with an NRC rating of only 0.25 can still be rendered useless.

Panel Size

The final feature to consider when choosing the best acoustic panels is the size and number of panels you will receive. If you need to cover a large area, you will need a large number of fairly large foam acoustic panels.

Foam acoustic panels are typically available in 24" x 24" squares or 24" x 48" rectangles. These 24" x 24" or 24" x 48" panels are usually supplied in packs of 12, but can sometimes come in packs of 6, 18 or 24.
